SARAH EMERSON BARGED into her first-floor apartment carrying a large bag of Chinese food. She slammed the door behind her and locked it. The super of the building had asked her about all the shouting that came from her apartment. Sarah pressed her back against the door. Her neighbors often complained about all the screaming and banging. They did so by tapping on the vertical steam pipe that ran throughout the entire building. Sarah's mood swings were well known by her neighbors.

She was fired from her job at the veterinary hospital for taking too many days off. She removed the Chinese food from the bag and placed her dead cat in it. Her dead cat had been lying in the kitchen for three days. The remaining cat watched. She walked over toward the door and pressed her ear against it, the super was gone. Sarah quickly opened the door and ran toward the incinerator. She dropped the bag down the chute.
